According to number of cylinder
we can classify engines according to number of cylinder in engines i.e. single cylinder ,two cylinder ,four cylinder engines ,six or eight and even sixteen cylinder engines or more as used in Big cargo ships .world’s largest engine is The Wärtsilä RT-flex96C with 14 cylinder.
A) Single cylinder engines have one cylinder as per name suggest they are small compact, light in weight that’s why suitable for fitting in small machine and motorbikes. B) Four or two cylinder engines are widely used in all types of car and also in commercial vehicle due to their high power delivery compared to single cylinder Engines. C)Sixteen cylinder engine are rarely used in automobile due to the high manufacturing and maintenance cost .
According to number of stroke we can classify engines according to the number of stroke in a Power cycle .first of all i will tell you what is stroke ,stroke is the distance traveled by piston inside the cylinder from one end to another end of the cylinder .
A) Two stroke engines ,in this type of engine piston has to travel two times from one end to other end for completing the one power cycle.
B)In four stroke engines piston travels four time from one end to another end of cylinder to complete the one power cycle .
one interesting viva question arises here which was asked to me can you judged which engine it is by just seeing its flywheel ?? is it two stroke or four stroke engines .
